A request, consent and compulsory legal process are not the same
Police may ask a homeowner for a clip, seek data from a provider, request preservation, or use formal legal powers. Identify which route is being used before sharing or deleting anything.
When a request arrives
- Verify the officer, agency and contact details independently.
- Ask whether the request is voluntary or based on compulsory legal authority.
- Record the incident, date, time range, camera and precise scope requested.
- Preserve the original relevant clip and its timestamp information.
- Avoid editing, captions or re-encoding the only copy.
- Consider other people captured and share no more than necessary.
- Keep a record of what was supplied, when, how and to whom.
- Seek local legal advice when the scope, authority or consequences are unclear.
Do not assume the provider and homeowner receive the same request. Cloud providers may respond under their own legal obligations, terms, emergency procedures and jurisdiction.
