PoE or Wi‑Fi Security Cameras? Compare Power, Cabling and Outages

Choose the connection that still works on a bad day

PoE usually wins for fixed, always-on coverage. Wi‑Fi is often the better retrofit. The right answer depends on power, recording and what happens when a router, cable or internet connection fails.

Choose PoE when…

You can run Ethernet, want continuous recording, need several fixed cameras, or can protect the switch and recorder with backup power.

Choose Wi‑Fi when…

Cable routes are impractical, the camera is easy to reach, event clips are enough, and you have tested signal quality at the exact mounting point.

Consider a mixed system

Use PoE for entrances and other critical views, then add Wi‑Fi or battery cameras where cabling would be disruptive.

What fails during an outage?

Plan before you buy

  • Mark the view and identification distance before choosing resolution.
  • Map cable routes, socket locations and weatherproof entry points.
  • Total the PoE wattage, including infrared illumination, then keep headroom.
  • Test Wi‑Fi at the final height, with doors shut and at busy network times.
  • Decide whether footage must survive internet, router and power failures.
  • Use unique credentials, updates and network separation where practical.
  • Use competent installation for outdoor cabling, surge protection and local electrical requirements.
