A practical guide to camera type, placement, recording, detection, privacy and resilient evidence—covering ordinary homes through to difficult rural, perimeter and low-light sites.
Define what the image must prove
“Cover the driveway” is too vague. Decide whether each view must detect activity, observe what is happening, recognise a known person or produce identification-quality detail. One wide overview camera rarely delivers useful facial or number-plate evidence everywhere in the scene.
Something entered the zone
A broad view can alert you that a person or vehicle is present, but may not reveal who it is.
Confirm a familiar subject
A tighter, well-lit angle may let you recognise someone you already know or distinguish a known vehicle.
Capture usable detail
Face or plate capture needs deliberate distance, angle, shutter, lighting and pixel density—not simply a higher resolution label.
Choose the recording architecture first

Match the body style to the job
Turret / eyeball
Compact, easy to aim and less prone to infrared reflection from a clear dome cover. A strong general-purpose choice.
Bullet
Visible deterrent with a clear direction of view and room for larger optics or illumination. More exposed to tampering.
Dome
Discreet and often impact-resistant, but dirty or scratched covers can degrade night images and reflect infrared.
PTZ
Useful for active operators covering large areas. It only sees where it is pointed, so fixed cameras should preserve critical evidence.
Dual-lens / panoramic
Reduces blind spots and can cover wide façades, but edge detail and stitched images need checking at the required distance.
Doorway / intercom camera
Deliberately positioned for faces and conversations at a controlled entry point; best paired with an approach view.
Placement makes or breaks the result
- Prioritise entrances, side passages, ground-floor access, garages, gates and secluded approaches.
- Use a tighter identification view at predictable choke points rather than relying only on wide overviews.
- Avoid pointing directly into sunrise, sunset, headlights or bright exterior lights without testing WDR performance.
- Mount high enough to resist tampering but not so high that faces become the tops of heads.
- Keep soffits, walls, cobwebs and nearby foliage out of infrared beams to prevent flare and false alerts.
- Test the actual scene by day, dusk, darkness, rain and with a hood or cap—not just on installation day.
- Plan overlapping coverage so a person approaching one camera can be captured by another.
- Use privacy masks and physical aim to exclude neighbours, windows and areas irrelevant to the security purpose.
Protect the evidence path
Retention
Calculate storage from camera count, resolution, frame rate, codec, scene movement and recording mode. Keep footage only as long as genuinely needed.
Recorder security
Hide and physically protect the NVR/DVR, restrict account access and consider encrypted off-site copies of critical events.
Network security
Replace defaults, use unique passwords and MFA, update firmware, remove stale users and avoid unnecessary internet exposure.
Time & export
Correct time synchronisation matters. Practise exporting a playable clip with enough lead-in, aftermath and an integrity-preserving original.
Power resilience
A UPS can keep the router, PoE switch and recorder alive briefly. Decide what should happen during a longer power or broadband failure.
Health monitoring
Use alerts for camera offline, storage failure, lens obstruction and recording faults; periodically verify footage rather than trusting a green status light.
Specialist and emerging camera layers

Privacy by design
Record the minimum area and audio needed for a clear security purpose. Camera ownership does not automatically permit intrusive recording of neighbours, public space, workers, tenants or visitors.
Installer and product checklist
- Written purpose and required detail for every view.
- Day/night sample or demonstration at the real capture distance.
- Lens focal length and scene width—not resolution alone.
- Ingress, impact and operating-temperature ratings suitable for the location.
- Exact local/cloud recording behaviour during internet and power loss.
- Storage calculation, retention setting and usable export process.
- Cybersecurity policy, update period, MFA and user-role support.
- Camera-offline and storage-failure notifications.
- Privacy masks, signage and audio settings documented at handover.
- Labour, warranty, maintenance, call-out and replacement availability.

Use cameras as one verified layer
Combine sensible surveillance with lighting, physical delay, intrusion detection and a response plan. A notification without dependable evidence—or evidence without anyone able to respond—is an incomplete system.
