Choose the event first, then the product
A contact sensor reports an opening; a vibration sensor may warn before entry; a glass-break sensor listens across a room; and an outdoor curtain detector protects a narrow boundary. Those are different jobs. Build in layers, place each sensor for its intended event and decide who receives the alert when nobody is watching the app.

Photo verification can help distinguish an intruder from a nuisance trigger before action is taken. Adjustable detection, pet-immunity claims and anti-masking are useful, but only when the site survey and mounting are correct.
Compare: exact hub compatibility, photo features supported by the chosen model, detector height, coverage, cellular backup and monitoring-company integration.
OPTEX BXS-RAM
Best for: protecting the immediate exterior boundary of a house with narrow detection along both sides of a wall.
This is a specialist detector rather than a consumer app gadget. Independent left/right settings and narrow curtain coverage can warn before a door or window is reached while limiting detection beyond the property line.
Compare: compatible transmitter, panel inputs, mounting surface, vegetation, pets, neighbour boundaries and installer support.
High-value layers for doors, windows and rooms
Ring Alarm Glass Break Sensor
Best for: existing Ring Alarm households with several glass doors or windows in one room.
An acoustic sensor can cover glass that would otherwise need multiple contacts. Room acoustics, glass type, placement and competing sounds matter, so follow Ring’s testing and positioning instructions.
Compare: regional Ring Alarm support, listening range, siren behaviour, subscription/monitoring availability and false-alarm controls.
Eve Door & Window
Best for: Matter-over-Thread homes wanting local open/closed status and automations without a brand-specific security panel.
Broad Matter support makes it more portable between smart-home platforms than many proprietary contacts. Its real value depends on the controller’s notification and automation options.
Compare: Thread coverage, controller support, notification delay, sensor-to-magnet gap and battery availability.
Aqara Door and Window Sensor P2
Best for: multi-platform homes that already have a compatible Matter controller and Thread border router.
Native Matter support makes this a flexible opening sensor for doors, windows, gates or cupboards within its environmental limits. Platform-specific features can still differ.
Compare: border-router compatibility, magnet alignment, local stock, battery type and which alerts your chosen platform exposes.
Affordable extra layers for movement, tampering and leaks
Aqara Vibration Sensor T1
Best for: adding vibration, tilt or drop alerts to windows, drawers, safes and other movable objects.
It can flag activity before a contact sensor sees an opening, but vibration is context-sensitive. A slamming door, traffic or machinery may require sensitivity and placement tuning.
Compare: hub model, regional availability, mounting surface, alert rules and real-world false triggers before relying on it.
TP-Link Tapo T100
Best for: Tapo households wanting inexpensive indoor movement alerts and camera/light automations.
The T100 can trigger a hub alarm or other Tapo products when movement is detected. It is a useful consumer layer, not a substitute for a graded detector and monitored panel.
Compare: Tapo hub cost, pet movement, field of view, mounting angle, notification reliability and local product availability.
FIBARO Flood Sensor
Best for: Z-Wave homes needing an audible and connected warning near a boiler, water heater, washing machine or sink.
Flood detection is not intrusion detection, but it protects against a common source of severe home damage. Z-Wave region and controller compatibility must match; radio frequencies are not globally interchangeable.
Compare: regional Z-Wave frequency, controller support, audible alarm, probe position and whether an automation can shut off water.
