Pet-Friendly Motion Sensors: Reduce False Alarms Without Creating Blind Spots

“Pet immune” is a configuration claim, not a guarantee. The result depends on mounting height, room geometry, pet behaviour and the exact sensor’s limits.

Design principle: keep door and window contacts as the first perimeter layer. Tune interior motion detection without creating a low, predictable route through the room.

Why pets still trigger sensors

Height changes

Cats climb furniture, dogs use stairs and multiple pets can appear as a larger moving heat source.

Room effects

Sun-heated floors, moving curtains, fireplaces, radiators and HVAC airflow can complicate detection.

Poor placement

A sensor aimed at stairs, shelving or a favourite jumping point sees behaviour the installer never tested.

A safer commissioning test

  1. Check the manufacturer’s mounting height, orientation and stated pet-size conditions.
  2. Map where the pet sleeps, jumps, climbs and crosses the room—during both day and night.
  3. Remove movable objects from the detection field and avoid direct heat or intense sunlight.
  4. Run a walk test for people, then observe normal pet movement for several armed periods.
  5. Review the exact zone and time of every alert; change one variable at a time.
  6. Confirm the adjusted system still detects a person approaching protected routes.

Layer instead of over-tuning

If reliable separation is impossible in a particular room, relocate the sensor or use a different detection layer rather than lowering sensitivity until the area is effectively unprotected.
