Ireland: preserve relevant footage and identify the legal basis
An Garda Síochána may ask an owner for footage relevant to an incident or use applicable legal powers. Cloud-provider disclosure can involve a separate process and jurisdiction.
Practical response
- Verify the Garda station, member and incident reference using published contact details.
- Ask whether the request is voluntary or compulsory and define the exact time window.
- Preserve the original recording and associated timestamp information.
- Avoid disclosing unrelated footage of neighbours, visitors or the household.
- Record what was supplied and seek Irish legal advice if the request is broad or disputed.
Domestic CCTV may fall outside the household exemption when it extends into public or neighbouring areas. Data-protection duties can then apply.
