United States: separate a homeowner request from provider legal process
Police may ask an owner to share a clip voluntarily. Agencies can also seek electronic evidence from service providers using applicable federal or state process, and providers may maintain emergency-disclosure procedures.
Practical response
- Verify the agency and case reference independently.
- Ask whether the request is voluntary, a warrant, subpoena, court order or another process.
- Limit any voluntary export to the relevant camera and time window.
- Preserve the original and document chain of transfer.
- Obtain state-specific advice; recording, privacy and procedure differ across jurisdictions.
Provider-held footage may sit under a different legal framework from a clip stored on your phone or recorder.
Official starting point: the US Department of Justice CLOUD Act resources explain part of the framework for provider-held electronic evidence.
