A practical guide to laminated and attack-resistant glazing, retrofit security film, polycarbonate, internal grilles and shutters—covering frames, anchoring, escape, fire safety, planning and realistic forced-entry delay.

Start with the attack you need to resist

A window may need to resist a quick smash-and-reach attack, repeated blows intended to create a body-sized opening, removal of the glazing from its frame, or levering of the whole window. “Shatterproof,” “anti-burglary” and film thickness alone do not state a tested resistance level.

Film or laminated construction can retain broken pieces and reduce flying glass, but retained glass may still leave the frame.

Tested glazing is designed to delay penetration under defined impacts or tool attack when installed in a suitable system.

Protect the opening

Secondary barrier

A shutter or grille can provide a separate obstacle before or behind the glass while preserving the window’s normal function when open.

Understand the material differences

Material Behaviour Security implication
Annealed glass Breaks into sharp fragments under sufficient impact. Offers little deliberate forced-entry resistance without another layer.
Heat-strengthened / toughened glass Improved strength; toughened glass breaks into many smaller pieces. Human-impact safety is not the same as burglary resistance; once broken, the opening may clear quickly.
Laminated glass Glass layers bonded around one or more plastic interlayers retain fragments. Can delay penetration, but performance depends on the tested make-up, interlayer, support and frame.
Security glazing tested to EN 356 Classified under defined impact or manual-attack tests. Specify the required class and evidence for the complete glazing product—not just “laminated.”
Polycarbonate / glazing composites High impact resistance with lower breakage than ordinary glass. Scratching, UV ageing, fire performance, thermal movement and fixing design need professional consideration.
Insulating glass unit Multiple panes separated by a sealed cavity for thermal performance. Confirm which pane provides security and whether the complete unit, beads and frame maintain it.

Security film only works as an installed system

Retrofit film can improve fragment retention and may increase the time needed to make an opening. For stronger forced-entry performance, the filmed pane often needs a tested attachment that transfers load into the frame. A film applied only to the visible glass can remain intact yet be pushed out as one sheet.

Film specification

Ask for the precise product, thickness, layers, adhesive, glass compatibility, edge clearance and independently tested configuration.

Edge attachment

Mechanical or structural-sealant anchoring may connect the filmed glass to the frame. It must match the tested system and substrate.

Existing glass survey

Identify pane type, defects, coatings, thermal exposure, frame condition and whether the glass can accept the proposed film safely.

Optical and thermal effects

Check haze, distortion, reflectivity, colour, heat absorption, thermal-stress risk and compatibility with insulating glass warranties.

Edges and seals

Poor preparation, moisture, incompatible sealants and unprotected edges can cause lifting, bubbling or premature failure.

Service life

Document the warranty, inspection signs and replacement date; sunlight, cleaners, moisture and edge condition affect longevity.

Do not buy film from a hammer video alone. Ask whether the demonstrated glass, frame, anchoring and attack method match your installation and whether an accredited test report supports the claim.

The frame and wall complete the barrier

  • Specify glazing beads on the protected side or use a tested anti-removal arrangement.
  • Ensure pane edge cover and setting blocks match the tested glazing configuration.
  • Check frame material, reinforcement, corner joints, mullions and transoms under attack load.
  • Use fixings of suitable type, diameter, spacing, embedment and edge distance for the wall substrate.
  • Strengthen weak reveals, decayed timber, loose masonry and poorly packed gaps before upgrading glass.
  • Protect handles, locks and keys from reach-through once the outer pane is damaged.
  • Confirm hinges, keeps, restrictors and multipoint locking are compatible with the desired resistance.
  • For replacements, consider a security-rated complete window or doorset rather than combining untested parts.

Grilles and shutters add a separate layer

Barrier Advantages Watch for
Internal retractable grille Protected from weather and some tampering; can preserve the external appearance. Glass may still be broken; the grille, tracks, locks and fixings need tested resistance.
External roller shutter Protects the glazing itself and creates a visible deterrent. Planning, wind rating, end locks, guide attack, lifting, power failure and emergency opening.
Internal roller shutter Reduced external visual impact and protected mechanism. Glass remains exposed; sufficient internal space and strong fixing structure are required.
Fixed grille / bars Simple continuous barrier for selected non-escape openings. Can trap occupants, obstruct rescue, affect planning and create lever points if poorly fixed.
Security screen May allow airflow and visibility while resisting defined cutting or impact. Mesh, frame, hinges, locks and wall fixings must form a tested assembly.
Plantation-style security shutter Residential appearance with an internal lockable barrier. Decorative products vary greatly; request attack-testing evidence, not appearance claims.

Security must preserve escape and rescue

Emergency egress

Do not permanently bar a required escape window or route. Occupants must be able to release suitable barriers from inside without searching for hidden keys.

Fire strategy

Coordinate shutters, grilles, glazing and controls with smoke detection, fire doors, evacuation and firefighter access.

Power failure

Motorised shutters need defined safe behaviour, backup or manual release that remains secure from outside.

Children and vulnerable users

Release forces, reach, dexterity and instructions should reflect the people who actually occupy the property.

Bedroom windows

Treat sleeping-room protection especially carefully; intrusion delay must not create fatal delay during a fire.

Daily discipline

A barrier that is inconvenient may be left open. Select an arrangement residents can use reliably every day.

Detection and evidence around the opening

  • Add alarm-grade shock or glass-break detection appropriate to the pane and frame.
  • Use an opening contact to confirm the sash, door or shutter position.
  • Place exterior cameras to capture approach and face detail before the attacker reaches the glass.
  • Avoid internal infrared reflection from glazing when positioning cameras.
  • Ensure lighting supports identification without turning the window into a mirror at night.
  • Keep valuable portable targets and keys beyond reach and out of direct sight.

United KingdomEN 356 classifies security glazing; PAS 24 applies to relevant complete windows/doorsets. External shutters may need planning approval, especially in listed or conservation settings.
United StatesConfirm local building, egress, fire, glazing and wind requirements. Product claims may reference different ASTM or UL tests—compare the actual threat and assembly.

  • What attack—smash-and-reach, body-sized opening, tools or repeated impact—must be delayed?
  • Which independent test and classification supports the exact glazing or barrier?
  • Does evidence cover the complete pane, film, attachment, frame and fixing configuration?
  • What is the existing glass type, pane size, frame material and wall substrate?
  • How is filmed glass anchored so the retained sheet cannot simply leave the frame?
  • How are beads, handles, locks, hinges and frame corners protected?
  • What optical, thermal, fire, UV, cleaning and insulating-glass limitations apply?
  • Does the design preserve required escape and emergency access without external vulnerability?
