What security fog is—and is not

A security fog device rapidly releases a dense obscurant after a confirmed alarm event. Its purpose is to remove an intruder’s ability to see and reach a target, reducing the useful time available for theft. It does not physically restrain anyone, identify an intruder, summon help by itself or replace locks, alarms, cameras and response.

How a professional system works

Armed state

The device is supervised as part of the intrusion system. Fault, fluid, power and tamper states should be reported.

Confirmed intrusion

Defined detection sequences establish that activation is justified. Occupied and unoccupied modes may need different logic.

Controlled discharge

The device releases a calculated volume toward the protected area while avoiding unsafe obstruction of escape routes or occupied zones.

Alarm transmission

Cameras, monitoring and communications continue to provide verification and coordinate the response.

Secure reset

Only authorised people inspect the site, ventilate as instructed, preserve evidence and restore the system.

Where it can make sense

Detached garage or workshop Can obscure tools, bikes, machinery and vehicle keys before removal. Dust, temperature, animals, ignition sources and unplanned access matter.
Rural outbuilding or machinery store Adds active delay where police or keyholder travel time is long. Connectivity, backup power, building leakage and large volume affect performance.
Home office / stock room May protect small high-value inventory within a contained zone. Residential occupancy and false activation consequences can outweigh benefit.
Whole open-plan home Usually less attractive than protecting a defined target room. Large/leaky volume, people, pets, stairs, exits and fire detection make design complex.
Residential use needs particular restraint. A contained, professionally assessed protection zone is generally easier to justify than fogging general living areas where family members, guests, carers, pets or emergency responders may be present.

Size the real room, not the brochure

  • Measure protected volume, including ceiling height and connected spaces.
  • Account for doors, shutters, vents, extractors, draughts and other leakage paths.
  • Identify the target and create a barrier between it and likely intrusion routes.
  • Document discharge direction, hot surfaces and clearance around the nozzle.
  • Verify fill performance at commissioning without exceeding the intended obscuration.
  • Confirm fluid life, cartridge capacity, discharge count and refill availability.
  • Assess finishes, electronics, food, textiles, optics and other sensitive contents.
  • Provide supervised mains power and backup appropriate to the alarm grade/design.

Safety and fire systems must be designed together

Fire detection

Security fog may activate some smoke detection. The fire-alarm designer and fog installer must resolve detector interaction without weakening life safety.

Escape and visibility

Do not obscure stairs, exits or escape routes in a way that endangers occupants. Consider anyone who may be inside unexpectedly.

People and animals

Review respiratory vulnerability, children, older people, carers, staff, guests and pets. Use only documented fluid intended for the certified device.

Emergency responders

Provide suitable warning, system information and a safe isolation/reset method so responders do not mistake obscurant for fire smoke.

Residue and cleanup

Ask for independent material-safety documentation and written cleanup guidance. “Non-toxic” does not mean suitable for every person, material or environment.

Accidental activation

Plan ventilation, notifications, access control, incident recording and professional inspection before anyone simply re-enters and resets.

Use layered activation logic

A fog device should not discharge merely because one unreliable sensor changes state. The installer should document exactly what has to happen, when the device is inhibited and who can authorise or cancel activation.

Set/unset and occupancy state Prevents discharge when authorised people are likely to be present unless a separately assessed hold-up design applies.
Video verification Helps a monitoring centre or authorised user understand the event, but should not introduce unsafe delay.
Panic / hold-up activation Requires specialist risk assessment because obscuring an occupied space can affect victims, responders and escape.
Abort, inhibit and service mode Allows authorised testing, maintenance and exceptional access without accidental discharge.
Communications failure logic Defines whether the system can deploy when monitoring, broadband or cellular paths are unavailable.

Standards and country considerations

EN 50131-8:2019 covers security fog devices connected to intrusion and hold-up alarm systems in relevant European markets. It does not turn every installation into a safe or suitable design: country rules, alarm standards, electrical requirements, insurance conditions and fire-safety obligations still need checking.

United KingdomAsk for evidence of conformity to BS EN 50131-8:2019 and a competent alarm installer. Coordinate with the fire-risk assessment and insurer.
United StatesConfirm listed equipment, local fire/building requirements, alarm permits and the authority having jurisdiction before installation.

  • Which standard, certification and alarm grade apply to the device and installation?
  • What measured room volume, leakage and fill time underpin the design?
  • What independent signals are required before discharge?
  • How are occupied states, visitors, pets and vulnerable people protected?
  • How has interaction with smoke detection, ventilation and escape routes been resolved?
  • What fluid documentation, residue tests and material exclusions are supplied?
  • What happens during mains, battery, broadband and cellular failure?
  • Who receives faults, low-fluid, tamper and activation signals?
  • What are refill cost, shelf life, service interval, warranty and post-discharge call-out terms?
