Panic, duress and lone-person security systems
A practical guide to fixed panic buttons, wearable alarms, covert duress codes, scheduled check-ins, fall detection, monitored response and resilient communications.
An alarm is a response chain—not just a button
The best device is the one a person can activate under stress and whose signal reaches someone able to act. Design backwards from the required response, then select the device, communications and monitoring.
Make activation realistic
Fixed, wearable, voice, fall or check-in triggers suit different risks. The user must reach and recognise them under pressure.
Build a resilient path
Test cellular, Wi-Fi, radio and landline coverage in the actual rooms and outdoor areas where help may be needed.
Pre-agree the action
A family contact, control room, security team or emergency service needs clear location, risk and escalation instructions.
System types and best uses
Fixed panic button
Useful beside beds, entrances, counters and safe rooms. Use guarded or two-button activation where accidental presses are likely.
Wearable personal alarm
A pendant, watch or clip stays with the user and may add two-way audio or location. Comfort, charging and water resistance determine whether it is worn.
Covert duress code
A special keypad code appears to operate normally while sending a silent alert. It requires training and must never be confused with the everyday code.
Dead-man timer
The user checks in or resets a timer. A missed check triggers escalation, useful where incapacity may prevent a deliberate alarm.
Fall or inactivity detection
Automatic sensing can add protection but cannot detect every fall or distinguish all normal movement. Treat it as an additional layer.
Journey or appointment monitoring
A timed session records destination, expected finish and escalation contacts, suitable for lone visits, travel and remote work.

Build the complete alarm pathway
1. Activation
Define deliberate, automatic and missed-check triggers. Prevent accidental activation without making the device slow or difficult.
2. Acknowledgement
Use discreet vibration, light or audio where safe so the user knows the alert left the device. Avoid feedback that could escalate a threat.
3. Communication
Specify the primary and backup networks, battery reserve, supervision interval and response to loss of connection.
4. Verification
Two-way audio, a callback, camera view or agreed phrase can clarify the event—but verification must never create a dangerous delay.
5. Escalation
State who is called first, how long they have, when emergency services or security are contacted and what information is shared.
6. Access and aftercare
Responders need a safe access plan. Log the incident, support the person involved and revise the risk assessment after alarms or near misses.
Location and communication limits
GPS is weak indoors
A coordinate may identify the building but not the room, floor or access point. Store a structured address and internal location procedure.
Cellular coverage varies
Test every expected area, including basements, gardens, garages and travel routes. One network reading near a window is not enough.
Wi-Fi can fail
Power cuts, router faults and broadband outages can isolate an app-only device. Consider cellular or radio backup for critical use.
Two-way audio has limits
Noise, distance, clothing and an aggressive person may make conversation impossible. Pre-plan escalation when there is no voice response.
Battery habits matter
Low-battery alerts need an owner and a deadline. Charging should not leave the user unprotected during predictable risk periods.
Shared phones are risky
App permissions, operating-system power saving, logged-out accounts and device replacement can silently disable alarms.

Privacy, coercion and accessibility
Minimise tracking
Collect location only when needed, restrict who can view it, define retention and remove access promptly when roles or relationships change.
Protect the account
Use strong unique credentials and multi-factor authentication for administrators. Review shared accounts, recovery email and paired devices.
Design for the user
Consider dexterity, vision, hearing, speech, cognition, language and sensory needs. Vibration, large controls and simple feedback may matter.
Plan covertly when necessary
A visible app, notification or wearable may be unsafe under coercive control. Seek specialist domestic-abuse safety advice before deployment.
Control sensitive audio
Explain when microphones activate, who can listen, whether recordings are retained and how lawful access is governed.
Avoid overconfidence
No technology replaces avoiding a dangerous lone task, staffing adequately, locking risk areas or leaving when a situation feels unsafe.
Country notes
Emergency-service routing, occupational duties, monitoring certification and telecom availability differ. Confirm the applicable national and local rules.
United Kingdom
HSE guidance requires employers to assess lone-working risks, train, supervise, monitor, keep in touch and respond to incidents. Check current police response and alarm-monitoring requirements with an accredited provider.
United States
Requirements vary by sector and state. OSHA workplace-violence guidance and enforcement material recognise communication and panic-button controls in relevant high-risk settings; complete a role-specific assessment.
Canada
Working-alone requirements differ by province and territory. CCOHS recommends check-in and emergency plans, backup contacts and a clear code word where appropriate.
Australia
Model WHS guidance requires risks from remote or isolated work to be managed and effective communication provided; state and territory implementation must be checked.
Ireland
Employers should assess lone-work hazards under current Irish safety requirements and provide proportionate communication, supervision and emergency arrangements.
Home and family use
Ask the provider which monitoring centre receives the signal, its operating hours, average handling process, cancellation terms and responder-access procedure.
