Home-security system costs: equipment, installation and five-year fees
The cheapest starter kit can become the expensive option once cameras, subscriptions, installation, batteries, connectivity and replacement costs are counted.
Compare five-year cost, not the checkout price
Use the same coverage brief for every quote: entrances, vulnerable windows, cameras, sirens, smoke/CO or water devices, monitoring and backup communication. A lower quote that protects fewer zones is not a like-for-like saving.

Example five-year calculation
| Example line | Input | Five-year contribution |
|---|---|---|
| Core equipment | 600 in local currency | 600 |
| Installation | 350 once | 350 |
| Monitoring/recording | 25 per month | 1,500 |
| Annual service | 120 per year | 600 |
| Batteries and maintenance | 80 per year average | 400 |
| Replacement allowance | 250 during year four | 250 |
| Total | Do not count inflation in this simple example | 3,700 |
This is a calculation example, not a market quote. Replace every figure with a written price for your country, property and chosen service. For a more cautious forecast, increase recurring fees annually and include at least one camera or hub replacement.
Three ownership models
DIY and self-monitored
Usually lower installation and monitoring cost, but the household must see alerts, verify events and decide what to do. Add cloud recording, replacement batteries and networking rather than assuming “no monthly fee” means no ongoing cost.
DIY with professional monitoring
Purchased equipment plus a monthly monitoring plan can balance flexibility and response. Confirm whether video verification, guard attendance, cellular backup and emergency dispatch are actually included in your country.
Professionally installed and monitored
Higher survey, fit and service cost may buy graded equipment, better perimeter design, maintenance and insurer acceptance. Distinguish owned hardware from a rental/service contract.
Hybrid system
A dedicated monitored alarm plus separately purchased cameras or smart-home devices can reduce lock-in, but creates multiple apps, subscriptions and support routes. Price them all.
Current subscription examples—not universal rankings
| Market | Official example checked | What it demonstrates |
|---|---|---|
| United Kingdom | Ring Protect: £4.99, £7.99 or £15.99 monthly tiers. SimpliSafe UK lists self-monitoring and professional plans at different daily/monthly levels. | Recording, remote features and response sit in different tiers; compare exact inclusions. |
| United States | SimpliSafe lists self-monitoring, Standard, Core and higher Active Guard tiers with materially different daily costs. | “Monitoring” ranges from basic dispatch to active video intervention; the label alone is insufficient. |
| Canada | Ring lists CAD$5.99 Solo, CAD$14.99 Multi and CAD$29.99 Pro monthly, with applicable taxes; monitoring terms vary. | Taxes, province availability and monitoring add-ons can alter the headline subscription. |
| Australia | Ring’s regional pages separate recording plans and professional-protection offerings. | Do not import US plan descriptions; check Australian features, price and emergency support. |
| Ireland | Ring’s EU plan page lists €3.99 Solo, €9.99 Multi and €19.99 Pro monthly, with annual options. | EU pricing does not prove Irish monitoring or response availability; verify the service separately. |
