Separate devices without breaking the security system
A guest or dedicated IoT network can reduce unnecessary access between cameras, locks, alarms and personal computers. First map which devices must communicate locally, then isolate only what you can test.
Guest network
The easiest option on many routers. Check whether devices can see one another, whether your phone can reach them locally and whether internet-only operation is acceptable.
Dedicated IoT network
A separate network name may offer useful controls without advanced equipment. Confirm firewall and client-isolation behaviour.
VLAN
More control for capable users and installers, but rules, discovery protocols and maintenance are more complex.
Map communications first

Safe setup sequence
- Update the router and record the current working configuration.
- Create a new network with WPA2 or WPA3 as supported and a unique password.
- Move one non-critical device first.
- Test live view, alerts, recording, talkback, local storage and outage behaviour.
- Move the related hub or recorder only when you understand the dependency.
- Block unnecessary device-to-device access and administration from the internet.
- Document the network so future replacement and recovery are possible.
