Security Camera Night Vision: Avoid Glass Reflection and Missed Detail

Good night vision is a placement problem before it is a specification

Infrared range claims do not guarantee useful faces, clothing detail or vehicle evidence. Reflections, close objects, motion and exposure settings can spoil an otherwise capable camera.

Behind glass?

Built-in infrared commonly reflects from the glass back into the lens. Disable it and use suitable exterior lighting or mount the camera outside.

Washed-out foreground?

Walls, soffits, drainpipes, foliage and spider webs close to the lens can dominate exposure. Reframe or reduce illumination.

Sharp stills, blurred people?

Slow shutter speeds brighten a scene but smear movement. Test with a real person walking through the target area.

Symptom, cause and practical fix

Face lacks detail Subject too far away, motion blur, backlight or overexposure Narrow the scene, improve visible lighting and tune exposure for the target distance.
Colour disappears too early Night-mode threshold or available light Review day/night switching and add even, controlled visible lighting if colour matters.
Do not test from the app while standing still. Walk the route at normal speed, wearing light and dark clothing, at the distance where identification matters.

A useful night test

  1. Record a daytime baseline from the final mounting height.
  2. Repeat at dusk, full darkness and with porch or street lights on.
  3. Walk toward, across and away from the camera.
  4. Check faces and clothing in exported footageโ€”not only the small live preview.
  5. Repeat after rain, when reflections and water droplets are more demanding.
  6. Test alerts, recording start time and the seconds before the event.
  7. Check whether a hood, dome or nearby surface enters the infrared beam.

Settings worth understanding

IR intensity

Automatic is a starting point. Reducing intensity can recover detail when nearby surfaces are overexposed.

Shutter and gain

More brightness can mean more blur or noise. Tune for moving subjects rather than a perfect empty scene.

Detection zones

Exclude foliage, roads and reflective areas where possible, but never let an activity zone substitute for a useful camera view.

Number-plate capture is a specialist task involving angle, shutter, illumination and distance. A wide overview camera rarely provides dependable plate detail at night.
