Shed, Garage and Garden Security: A Complete Practical Guide

Protect bikes, tools, vehicles and outdoor equipment—and stop an outbuilding from becoming the route or toolkit for entry into the home.

Outbuildings are often less visible, less frequently checked and secured with weaker doors than the house. They may also contain ladders and tools that can be used against the main property. Treat the boundary, building, contents, detection and response as one system.

Priority: secure tools and ladders even when their resale value is low. Their importance is not only what they are worth, but what they could help someone reach or force.

Build five layers

Boundary

Maintain fences and gates, remove footholds, cut back concealment and make the legitimate route obvious.

Shell

Inspect doors, frames, windows, hinges and roof panels. A large padlock cannot compensate for a weak hasp or rotten timber.

Anchoring

Lock bikes, machinery and high-value tools to a correctly installed ground or wall anchor using suitable hardware.

Detection

Use door contacts, vibration or motion sensors and lighting where they produce actionable alerts rather than constant false alarms.

Evidence

Record models, serial numbers and photographs; keep the inventory away from the outbuilding.

Garden gate Latch reachability, hinges, gaps, climb aids and whether it is routinely left open. Use suitable locking hardware, protect hinge pins and agree shared-access rules.
Shed Hasp, staples, screws, frame, exposed hinges, glazing and roof edges. Reinforce the complete assembly; obscure internal views without creating concealment.
Garage Main door release, side door, internal house door, windows and remote controls. Follow manufacturer guidance, protect the connecting door as an external threshold and remove remotes from vehicles outside.
Bikes and tools Serials, anchor and whether one cut frees several items. Use layered locking, separate valuable items and store keys/batteries securely.
Garden technology Camera, sensor, gate controller, Wi-Fi extender and smart-lock accounts. Update firmware, use unique credentials and isolate risky outdoor devices where appropriate.

Security gates

A gate should delay access without blocking an escape route, authorised access, utility equipment or emergency services. Select a design with limited footholds, protected hinges and safe operation from the secure side. Powered gates require competent installation, safety devices and maintenance; do not treat an automated gate as a simple DIY security product.

Inventory and maintenance checklist

  • Full-property and close-up photographs
  • Manufacturer, model and serial number
  • Purchase date, price and receipt
  • Distinctive marks or modifications
  • Keys, codes and remote holders reviewed
  • Ground/wall anchors remain firm
  • Sensor batteries and alerts tested
  • Insurer’s lock/storage conditions checked
  • Corrosion and timber movement inspected
  • Vegetation no longer blocks cameras
