Matter and home security: what it does—and does not—guarantee
Matter can make compatible locks, sensors, lights, hubs and cameras easier to connect across ecosystems. It cannot tell you whether a product is physically strong, privately operated, professionally monitored or suitable for your insurer.
The short answer
Matter is an IP-based interoperability standard from the Connectivity Standards Alliance. It gives certified devices a shared way to be commissioned, identified and controlled over technologies such as Thread, Wi-Fi and Ethernet. Matter 1.5 added a standardised camera capability, including live audio/video, two-way communication, privacy zones and local or cloud storage options. Matter 1.5.1 subsequently refined camera performance and implementation flexibility—but manufacturers and platforms still decide which features they implement and expose.

Matter, Thread and Wi-Fi are different things

Five checks before buying a Matter security device
1. Confirm the exact feature
“Works with Matter” may expose lock/unlock, open/closed or motion while leaving video history, biometrics, siren settings or advanced detection in the manufacturer’s app.
2. Confirm the network path
Check whether the device uses Thread, Wi-Fi or a brand bridge. A Thread device needs a compatible border router in the relevant home; a bridged device may still rely heavily on its vendor hub.
3. Separate local control from remote alerts
A local command can work without the manufacturer cloud while remote access, push notifications, video storage or account recovery may still require internet services.
4. Check physical and service standards
For locks and alarms, examine recognised physical-security or alarm standards, installer requirements, monitoring arrangements and insurer conditions independently of Matter.
5. Review support and privacy
Look for a stated update period, vulnerability-reporting route, two-factor authentication, encryption description, data-retention controls and a workable deletion process.
Then test failure modes
Disconnect the internet, reboot the hub, remove one controller and simulate a low battery. Confirm what remains local, what stops and which household member receives alerts.

A sensible security architecture
Use Matter for coordination
Let a verified door opening turn on lights, show a supported camera, announce an alert or change a household scene across compatible platforms.
Keep the alarm independent
A professionally monitored or graded alarm should retain its own panel, tamper protection, backup power and response path rather than depend on a general smart-home routine.
Keep safe manual fallbacks
Locks need dependable exit and emergency access. Gates and doors must remain safe during power, network, app or account failure.
Minimise shared access
Use named household accounts, strong authentication and the least access required. Remove former residents, guests and installers promptly.
